SpeedPulser

The SpeedPulser drives your original mechanical speedometer from an electronic speed signal, for gearboxes without a speedo cable fitting. As those cables get harder to find, it turns the signal into a motor drive that spins the speedo for you. Designed for MK1, MK2 and Scirocco clusters.

Voltage control: smooth from a standstill

Most motor drivers only vary the PWM, and a small motor at low PWM judders or stalls, so the needle sits on zero until you're doing 20 km/h or more. The current SpeedPulser board controls the motor's supply voltage as well. One drive value (rail volts × PWM) runs the motor:

  • Higher up, the PWM holds at its sweet spot and only the voltage moves, so the motor stays smooth and strong
  • Near zero, the voltage sits at its 3V minimum and the PWM eases off, so the needle can creep up from a standstill
  • Drive calibration: capture up to 10 needle marks on your own cluster from your phone, and speeds in between are interpolated. No code, no laptop
  • Test Board checks the voltage circuit at 5, 7.5 and 10V before you start

What you need

  • 12V power and ground
  • A 12V speed pulse: a gearbox hall sensor or a Can2Cluster
  • Need RPM or GPS speed too? See the SpeedPulser Pro

Setup

  • Slide the SpeedPulser over the OEM speedometer shaft at the back of the cluster
  • Secure it with the two pins
  • Wire in power, ground and your speed signal, then fine-tune over WiFi

Good to know

  • As an aftermarket part, consider clearance around the adapter; on some chassis space may be tight
  • Final firmware is confirmed at order stage or uploaded by the end user
  • Older PWM-only boards are still supported by the same firmware; on those, very low speeds (under about 20km/h) may read zero
  • Custom requests for other models are welcome; get in touch

Will it fit my cluster?

It fits MK1, MK2 and Scirocco clusters with no modifications. There are housings for VW, Mercedes, Smiths, Volvo, Jaguar, Porsche, Ford, Fiat and more in the Speedo Fitment Guide.

What speed signal does it need?

Any 12V speed pulse: a gearbox hall sensor (02J, 02M etc.) or the speed output of a Can2Cluster.

Can it do GPS speed or drive my rev counter?

Not this one. The SpeedPulser Pro adds GPS and CAN speed plus an RPM output on the same board. For RPM on its own, see CAN2RPM or the Coil Tacho Converter.

Will the needle move at low speed?

Yes, on the current board. Voltage control lets the needle creep up from a standstill instead of sitting on zero until around 20 km/h.

How do I calibrate it?

From your phone over WiFi. Drive calibration captures up to 10 needle marks on your own cluster, with no code and no laptop.

Returns

You have 30 days from delivery to ask for a return. Email sales@forbes-automotive.com first, and items need to be unused and in their original packaging.

Return postage is paid by you, unless the item arrived faulty, damaged or wasn't what you ordered. In that case we'll sort it out and cover the cost.

Custom tunes, ECU services and other made-to-order work can't be returned. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method within 10 working days.

Unfortunately, the Speed ​​Pulser doesn't fit plug and play. You have to grind a piece out of the bodywork. And I don't want to do that. It's a shame that it's not plug and play for the MK2.

I have a polo mk2f fitted with a lupo gti engine, with module saved ne £500 as was buying a similar model from the states. Not setup or mounted but have tested this and works a trest as the mk2f polo clocks use the same fitting as the mk2 golf.
