How to Install and Set Up the OpenHaldex C6 Controller – MQB Gen5 Guide

by Adam Forbes 07 Sep 2026

So you've got your OpenHaldex C6 Controller — now let's get it installed. This guide covers the installation process for MQB Gen5 Haldex vehicles (Golf MK7/MK7.5, Audi S3 8V, TT 8S, and similar), but the principles apply across all supported generations. For the full vehicle compatibility list, see the Haldex compatibility guide.

What You'll Need

  • OpenHaldex C6 Controller
  • Optional: Gen5 plug-and-play wiring harness (highly recommended — makes installation a 5 minute job)
  • Basic hand tools
  • A phone, tablet, or laptop with WiFi

Installation Overview

The OpenHaldex C6 Controller installs inline with your factory Haldex system, intercepting the CAN Bus signals between your ECU and the Haldex pump. No permanent modifications are required — the controller can be removed at any time.

With the Plug & Play Harness (Recommended)

  1. Lift the rear seat bench
  2. Locate the OEM Haldex connectors under the seat
  3. Unplug the OEM connectors
  4. Plug in the wiring harness — it uses OEM-matching connectors so there's no cutting or splicing
  5. Connect the OpenHaldex C6 Controller to the harness
  6. Replace the rear seat bench (optional!)

That's it. Total installation time with the harness is typically under 5 minutes.

Without the Harness

Installation without the harness requires wiring the controller directly inline using the supplied pins. This takes around 30 minutes and requires basic automotive wiring skills. Full pin-out details are available in the installation guide sent with your order and on the GitHub repository.

WiFi Setup & Configuration

Once installed, the controller broadcasts its own WiFi network. Connect to it from any device and open a browser — no app required. From the interface you can:

  • Select your operating mode (Stock, FWD, 75/25, 50/50, or Custom)
  • Build a custom speed/throttle lock map in Expert mode
  • Configure external button inputs (brake follow, handbrake follow)
  • Update firmware over WiFi

Firmware Updates

Firmware updates are released regularly on GitHub and can be applied via the updater tool — no specialist equipment needed, just a USB-C cable or the browser-based OTA updater:
